How Now

William Halstead, dying in 1645, left to the town five pounds "...to be laid out for a cow to be a continual help to such as are in need." When the cow got old she would be turned in for a fresh one, the town paying something to boot, and this continued for a long time...As late as 1767, the French family got the town cow.
